Prashan Vermat

PRASHANT VERMA is a young fashion designer from India who began his training in Fashion Design at the age of 18, in London, at the Fashion House of ALEXANDER McQUEEN, for the Menswear and Womenswear, Ready to Wear and Couture, working extensively on Prints and Embroideries for the Runway Presentations across 2003 – 2004, from where he moved on to press and design at milliner PHILIP TREACY, and then a powerful combination of the avante garde and the establishment at JOHN GALLIANO and CHRISTIAN DIOR in Paris, France.

In 2005 Prashant graduated from the National Institute of Fashion Technology, New Delhi, with a Diploma in Fashion Design and a graduate collection that was sponsored by Manish Arora, Puja Nayyar, Rohit Gandhi + Rahul Khanna, Varun Bahl, Ashish + Smita Soni, and Tarun Tahiliani.

Moving base to New Delhi in 2005, Prashant began to work closely in the Indian Design Industry, to further enhance his strengths in the workings of traditional crafts and techniques in contemporary fashion design. Across 2005 and 2006, Prashant worked at the design studio of Manish Arora – for the London Fashion Week SS 2005 and AW 2006/07 collections – and then for Rohit Gandhi and Rahul Khanna - as a stylist for the Wills Lifestyle India Fashion Week Grand Finale AW 2006 / 07 Runway Presentation.

In 2006, he launched his eponymous label, PRASHANT* - producing two annual womenswear collections comprising of prĂȘt-a-porter and haute couture, which are made available exclusively through the Prashant Verma Design Studio in New Delhi and have been featured in respected fashion newspapers and magazines such as Women’s Wear Daily, Andpersand, L’officiel, and Elle.

Focusing primarily on high-end evening wear, the collections exhibit a variety of techniques and ideas – signature digital prints, old school couture embroideries, hand crafted sculptural constructions in a luxurious and often unusual array of materials, blending silk with neoprene, knitwear in high quality viscose, cotton and silk jerseys, buffed leathers to yards of fragile organza – assimilating the traditional and technical diversity of textiles and craftsmanship.

Severely constructed, sharply body-contouring, dramatically voluminous and excessive – PRASHANT* upholds an aesthetic of visual severity, opulence, gloss and strength. And in its quest for intellectual and artistic provocation, it assimilates diverse historic and cultural influences – from the flawless perfection of old school Hollywood, to the undefeatable ambition of Alexander the Great, the tectonic energy of the Himalayan fold mountains and the awe inspiring infinity of the unconquered universe. Across its young, evolving, emotionally charged, intellectually stimulating and visually powerful body of work – PRASHANT* focuses on bringing forth an aesthetic which binds together his respect for old school classicism and academic splendour, with the aggression of his bold and fearless approach to design – an aesthetic that displays his greatest strength – this infinite aspiration.
